The city’s Homeless Strategies and Operations team will open the shelters for individuals in need of a safe, warm place to stay.

AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Austin will activate its cold weather shelters on Monday night as temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s

The city’s Homeless Strategies and Operations team will open the shelters for individuals in need of a safe, warm place to stay. Families with children and unaccompanied minors will be provided hotel lodging during the activation periods.

Registration will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Road, which will serve as the main check-in site for those seeking overnight shelter.

CapMetro bus routes to the center include lines 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105 and 801. Riders who cannot pay fare will still be provided transportation. Community partners who serve Austin’s unhoused population are encouraged to assist with transportation to the center.

CapMetro will transport clients from One Texas Center to shelter locations. An after-hours service will be available for those seeking transportation outside the registering period.

City officials said shelters may open up to one day ahead of expected cold weather and no later than 9 a.m. on days shelters could be available. The shelters become activated when forecasted temperatures reach 35 degrees or below.

Guests may bring personal belongings that can be carried onto CapMetro buses. Pets are permitted; guests should notify staff during registration if a crate is needed. Meals will be provided. Women and couples may stay in the same shelter but in separate areas as capacity allows.

While cold weather shelters primarily serve people experiencing homelessness, officials said they are open to anyone needing a warm place to stay overnight. For information about shelter activation, call the Cold Weather Shelter Infoline at 512-972-5055.

The city does not publicly list shelter locations to protect its guests’ privacy.
