AUSTIN, Texas — Burnt orange is taking over March Madness brackets as both the Texas men’s and women’s basketball teams clinched spots in the NCAA tournament, fueling excitement among fans and boosting business near the University of Texas campus.
The Texas men’s team is headed to the First Four, where it will play North Carolina State on Tuesday night. A win would put Texas into the main bracket for a matchup against No. 6 BYU.
UT Austin student Austin Giles said the tournament run is “good for everything around here,” adding he hopes the Longhorns “win it all in both sports.”
Giles also acknowledged the challenge ahead for the men, saying, “I mean, it is a tough road in March Madness. Anything can really happen, but, I really think they can make it far and hopefully win.”
UT Austin student Ezequiel Imbern said the tournament bids reflect the strength of the university’s athletic programs.
“It’s just a testament to the university. I think we have great athletic teams for all sports, and it just goes to show every year we have that caliber and we’re always showing up every year,” Imbern said.
On the women’s side, Texas secured a No. 1 seed, which means home-court advantage at the Moody Center for the first two rounds. Imbern said he’s eager to attend and support the team, adding, “The women’s team has been great the last 4 years I’ve been here. I don’t think they’ve ever had a bad season.”
With tournament games bringing increased attention to the program, local apparel stores are preparing for a surge in demand. Kelli Hanks, a store manager at Rally House, said the postseason buzz translates directly into business.
“It brings more traffic, it adds hype. People realize who the Longhorns are, if they didn’t already know, and it increases sales every time we have an event,” Hanks said.
Fans also shared optimistic expectations for both teams. A number of fans said they believe the men’s team can reach the Sweet 16, while predicting the women have what it takes to win the national title.
Texas women are scheduled to play their first game at the Moody Center on Friday.
