
University Hills is a $1 billion, 270-acre development off the UNIT Dallas campus in Southern Dallas. The mixed-use, Hoque Global development intends to be write the future of Southern Dallas. Presently, the development is a finalist in The Boring’s Company’s “Tunnel Vision Challenge“. If University Hills were to win, The Boring Company would create a free underground tunnel.
The Tunnel Vision Challenge was announced this past January. The challenge accepted proposals for various tunnel projects – whether a freight tunnel, water tunnel, pedestrian tunnel, or otherwise. Proposals were evaluated based on submissions were to answer questions of usefulness, stakeholder engagement, as well as regulatory, technical, and economic feasibility.
On March 23, the company will announce the winner – which will receive a free, one-mile tunnel with 12-foot inner diameter.
The Boring Company will employ its Prufrock digging machine. The advanced equipment is designed so that employees aren’t needed in the tunnel during operations. During its mining, the machine simultaneously installs tunnel liner. The company claims that Prufrock is the “safest, fastest, and least expensive method of tunneling”.
Among 16 finalists for The Boring Co. tunnel is University Hills. The Hoque Global development broke ground this past May. Plans for the $1 billion development call for 1500 multifamily residences, initially starting with 500 single-family homes and 250 multifamily homes.
University Hills will also feature 1.5 million square feet of commercial space including office space, retail, and a town center, as well as 50+ acres of parks and open green spaces. Developers plan to begin construction on homes in early 2027 with move-ins anticipated in mid 2027.
If The Boring Co. were to select University Hills as the winner, the tunnel would connect the development with the the UNT Dallas DART Station. The company will name the winner on Monday, March 23.
