Legendary quarterback Hunter Enis, 89, has worn many hats since his days leading the TCU team: professional football player, coach, philanthropist and oil executive.

Now, the businessman is adding actor to his resume as he makes his screen debut in the new independent film “Texas Rhapsody.”

The film follows Enis as he meets concert pianist Sergio Salani and Harvy, a formerly undocumented immigrant, in Big Spring. The three leads, who have no former actor training, play fictional versions of themselves.

“I’m not sure I’m much of an actor. I may drag the film down,” Enis said with a laugh. “But I think it’s so good, I won’t hurt it.”

Harvy’s full name is not being shared publicly to protect his status as a permanent resident, writer and producer Sam Pfiester said.

“Texas Rhapsody” explores immigration, gas drilling in the Permian Basin, and how music unites diverse people in the U.S., Pfiester said.

“We are the beacon of freedom and opportunity,” the 81-year-old writer said. “At some point in our history, our ancestors were immigrants. The film faces the immigration issue without taking sides and reminds us there are a lot of people who were not lucky enough to be born in America.”

The film has its world premiere at Texas Christian University on March 21. Proceeds from the screening go toward the university’s Ralph Lowe Energy Institute, which focuses on energy-related classes, seminars and training.

Pfiester’s inspiration for the film stemmed from meeting Enis, Salani and Harvy on three separate visits to West Texas.

The writer was introduced to Salani during a stay at the historic Hotel Settles four years ago. The Italian-American pianist was performing in the lobby when Pfiester approached him to spark a conversation, he said.

During a different trip to Big Spring, Pfiester’s pickup truck broke down on the highway. He called friends in the area for help who then connected him with Harvy. The local mechanic, who was undocumented at the time, spoke about his immigration journey from Nicaragua.

The writer then reconnected with Enis, who pioneered the development of the Barnett Shale through his Fort Worth company Four Sevens Oil Company. The two have been friends for more than 40 years.

All three agreed to star in the film’s reimagining of their meetings, Pfiester said. Filming took place over 10 days in March and April of last year. Salani composed the movie’s theme song.

“It was an odd convergence as I thought of those three stories,” he said. “I connected the dots and fictionalized it by making them meet at the same time.”

Pfiester hopes audiences walk away with a better understanding of “who we are as Americans,” he said.
