SAN ANTONIO – Two people have been hospitalized with serious injuries after a major crash on the West Side.

Around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, police were investigating a major crash involving two white sedans on Culebra Road on March 17 after officers began receiving numerous calls.

Officers on scene said the crash happened on Culebra Road “before Elmendorf” and involved two vehicles that collided after one of the cars crossed into oncoming traffic.

Police said one of the sedans had a single adult female driver. Police said she was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) in critical condition.

The other sedan had two occupants, who police described as an uncle and nephew. He said both were in critical condition and believed they were taken to University Hospital. Officers said the uncle was “20 to 21” years old and the nephew was 12.

Investigators were also looking into reports that racing played a role. Police said initial information suggested the two vehicles involved may have been racing, but later witness statements indicated the two cars that collided were not racing each other.

“What I’m being told is these two cars that collided were not actually racing each other,” Sgt. Montoya said. He said witnesses reported the sedan carrying the uncle and nephew was traveling eastbound on Culebra Road and was “possibly racing with another vehicle,” described as a black pickup truck, when it veered into oncoming traffic and hit the other white sedan.

Officers on scene said the black pickup truck was not involved in the collision, but officers were working to locate it.

Traffic investigators were at the scene, and police said they planned to go to the hospital afterward as part of the investigation.

Police on scene also said officers checked the area near a homeless camp and searched the ditch to make sure no one had gone over a railing. They said everyone in the wooded area below the bridge was OK and that police were not looking for any additional occupants.
