Fort Worth-area motorists heading west may need to alter their routes as a lengthy exit ramp closure starts near Aledo.

The westbound exit from Interstate 20 to FM 1187/FM 3325 closed March 17 for highway improvements. That exit will be replaced with another expected to open in the winter a few miles west near the I-20 and Interstate 30 split west of Fort Worth, Texas Department of Transportation officials said.

Until then, westbound motorists should exit at Walsh Ranch Parkway off I-30. That exit is several miles east of the current and future exits.

“The closed exit ramp is in the location of a planned entrance ramp,” Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Shawna Russell Jones said via email. “Motorists wanting to exit to FM 1187/FM 3325 will use the new ramp located east of the closed ramp.”

State transportation officials are working to improve I-30 and I-20 as part of a $541 million, three-phase infrastructure upgrade.

The interstates will be widened from four main lanes to six with continuous two-lane, one-way frontage roads in the project limits. Improvements will also be made to the interchange of I-30 and Spur 580/Camp Bowie Boulevard.

The first phase, which started in August 2023, is expected to be complete later this year. That work includes improvements to I-20 between Markum Ranch Road and the I-20/I-30 split. Two new interchanges will be built at Bentley Bridge Drive and Walsh Ranch Parkway.

Officials started the project’s second phase — improving I-20 and I-30 between FM 1187/FM 3325 and Linkcrest Drive — in September 2024.

That work, expected to be complete in early 2028, includes ramp modifications and auxiliary lanes to relieve congestion in the area. Interstate main lanes will be lowered to accommodate bridge clearances at FM 1187 and Walsh Ranch Parkway.

The project’s third phase will focus on I-30 improvements between Linkcrest Drive and West Loop 820. That project, part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative that works with communities to solve congestion, started in November 2024. That work is expected to be completed in 2030.
