Suspect shot during police investigation in Selma neighborhood

  • March 19, 2026

SELMA, Texas – A suspect was shot during a police investigation in a Selma neighborhood.

Around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 16800 block of Showdown Path in The Retreat at Retama Park Quadplex Subdivision.

Police said officers heard multiple gunshots in the area, and an estimated 10 to 15 shots were fired.

It is unclear if anyone was hit by the initial gunfire.

Witnesses told officers they saw a male wearing a dark-colored hoodie entering a nearby residence. Police said they found a person matching the male’s description in possession of a firearm.

“Officers have made multiple attempts to contact the individual and request that he exit the residence; however, the subject has not responded,” police said.

In a statement later Wednesday afternoon, police said that “after several hours, the incident escalated and the suspect was subsequently shot.”

Police did not clarify who shot the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a hospital. No officers were injured, police said.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting.

The shooting happened in a neighborhood adjacent to an elementary school, police said, “prompting an immediate and coordinated law enforcement response to ensure public safety.”

Selma Elementary administration said the school was “immediately placed on a SECURE response protocol” around 9:40 a.m.

The protocol was lifted at 2:15 p.m., the school said, and dismissal continued as regularly scheduled.

In a letter to Selma Elementary families, the school said, “At no time was there a direct threat to Selma Elementary, and our campus remained safe.”

“We will have increased police presence in the neighborhood to ensure our students return to home safely,” the school said.
