A man sits in the grass with a child in his lap, both of them reading a book together. Behind them, a woman lies on her stomach, also reading a book. Stacks of books sit in the grass as music flows behind them.

The Arlington Public Library and Levitt Pavilion are hosting Booked for the Night Concert, a free, family-friendly reading party from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the pavilion.

The event will celebrate the fun and joy of reading by getting the community involved, said Katie Talhelm, library services manager for youth services.

“What we hope that we get from it is a renewed sense in love for reading,” Talhelm said. “It is the library’s mission to engage our community in reading and literacy.”

Guests will be able to shop from book-themed vendors presented by Pretty Little Things Market and enjoy a silent reading hour at 6 p.m. The event will also feature a reading time at 7 p.m., a dance-along with a set from DJ Gurrl at 7:15 p.m. and a performance by the Brad Thompson Band at 8:30 p.m.

Admission and parking are free, and attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs for the open seating area, as well as well-behaved leashed pets.

Talhelm said it was important to be present for the community during a time when residents are looking for something to do.

“I like the idea that this event is very focused on reading and literacy,” she said. “Yes, there’s going to be music. Yes, there’s going to be fun things happening, but the core of the event is to get people excited about reading.”
