The University of Texas at Austin recently hooked another student — a Woodrow Wilson High School senior — with a first-dollar, full tuition scholarship.
Aaron Garcia received an Impact Scholarship, which is given to incoming “high-potential” students who are making a difference in their communities and is worth $48,000. Dallas ISD reported in its news briefing that only 100 scholars in the state get this award.
“Students are chosen to receive the award based on demonstrated leadership, proven academic success, perseverance, commitment to their schools and communities, and the information provided in their Free Application for Federal Student Aid,” according to UT’s website.
UT representatives surprised Garcia last week with a formal announcement at WWHS.
I am a North Texas native with roots in Arlington and Benbrook, and I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2018. My previous work has centered around small towns and cities west of Fort Worth, and my byline has appeared in The Springtown Epigraph/The Tri-County Reporter, Weatherford Democrat, NewsBreak, Fort Worth Weekly and The Shorthorn. I am happy to serve in Lakewood, which I’ve heard referred to as a small town within the big city. Feel free to email me at medwards@advocatemag.com
