On October 19, 2025, Hilda Stockmeyer Lewels passed peacefully surrounded by her loving husband Joe, son Christopher, and daughter Marisa. Hilda was taken slowly over the last three years by Alzheimer’s disease and we rejoice that she is free from her suffering and reunited with the Lord, her beloved son Nicholas, parents Consuelo and Juan “Hansy” Stockmeyer and brother Juan Stockmeyer.
Hilda had said she wanted the song “Singing in the Rain” played at her funeral, which says a lot about the kind of person she was. She loved the world, she loved life and above all she loved people. No matter how grey the skies of life became, she never gave into darkness or cynicism. She always had the capacity to love boundlessly and shine her light brighter. Whether it was the sales associate at a shop (and there were so many shops!), or the police officer pulling her over for a questionable stop at an intersection, she endeared herself to everyone. By the end of an interaction she would have a new friend that she sincerely cared for and invested in. Unrestrained with her love, and lavish with her affection, she made an indelible mark on the community of El Paso, which itself she loved greatly.
Hilda’s elegance, poise and beauty was always apparent, but those fortunate to have known her well, knew her to be funny, self deprecating and never inauthentic or pretentious. She loved history, art, reading and learning. She had endless curiosity and a hunger for travel and new experiences.
Hilda was the proud daughter of Consuelo and Juan Stockmeyer of Concheño and Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico and grew up in Kern Place. She attended St. Patrick and Radford schools before attending the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the “Mortar Board” Social Club. She spent several years as a Spanish and English teacher at Spring Branch Junior High School in Houston before returning to El Paso in her late twenties.
Hilda served the El Paso community with her involvement in many organizations including:
Duchess of Sun Carnival of El Paso, Director of the Pan American Round Table, Vice President of the El Paso County Historical Society, member and Chairman of the Christmas Fair of the Junior League of El Paso, member of El Dedon Verde Garden Club, member of Las Comadres, member of El Paso Symphony Guild, President of PTA Zach White Elementary School and member of St. Patrick Altar Society.
She was co-owner of Samarkand Designs in partnership with beloved friend Bonnie Birkelbach and worked as a real estate agent later in life.
Of all of Hilda’s many contributions and accomplishments, her greatest role was that of wife, mother and grandmother to her husband of 51 years Joe, children Nicholas, Christopher, Marisa and son-in-law Dan, and precious grandchildren Paul, Benjamin and Emilia. She made our world beautiful; she celebrated us, honored us and never criticized us. She was our best friend, closest confidant and biggest cheerleader. She taught us to move through the world with humility and showed us by example to preserve the dignity of all people. We will miss making her laugh and cherish the memories we made together. Her faith in God and legacy of love will live on and never be forgotten.
She is preceded in death by her father Juan “Hansy” Stockmeyer, mother Consuelo Stockmeyer, brother Juan Stockmeyer, son Nicholas Lewels, and nephews Hansy Bermudez and Karl Stockmeyer.
She is survived by husband Joe Lewels, son Christopher Lewels, daughter Marisa Marocco, son in law Dan Marocco, grandchildren Paul, Benjamin and Emilia Marocco, sisters Patricia Stockmeyer, Federika Stockmeyer and Barbara Stockmeyer, nieces Averil Gleason, Karla Franco and Anna Walker, nephews Philip and Donald Martin, Juan Stockmeyer, Mike Franco and Kieth Walker.
The family wishes to thank the staff at The Legacy at Cimarron, The Visiting Angels, Alianza Personal Care, Three Oaks Hospice and the staff at Providence Hospital Transmountain.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Annunciationhouse.org
