Garland Animal Services rescued 64 cats from “deplorable” living conditions, the department said in a social media post.

GARLAND, Texas — Garland Animal Services removed 64 cats from “deplorable” conditions, officials said.

The department, along with Garland police, executed a search and seizure warrant at a home and removed the cats from the property, animal services said in a social media post. The seizure was the largest in Garland Animal Services’ history, the post states.

“The conditions these animals were living in were deplorable,” the post states. “The property itself was in extremely poor condition, with dangerously high ammonia levels that required staff to wear respirators while on scene.”

Many of the cats appeared to be suffering from upper respiratory infections, and the majority were sick, officials said.

The owner cooperated with the investigation and voluntarily surrendered the cats, the post states.

“Garland will not stand by while animals suffer,” the post states. “Anyone committing cruelty will face the full force of the law. We are watching, and we will act.”

The cats are receiving urgent medical care, and more updates on their status will be released later, officials said. The department urges those who want to help to donate to support their care, or sign up to foster or adopt a cat.
