1. Texas law on school prayer period sees little support from school districts
A new Texas law that allows school districts to set aside a prayer period doesn’t seem to be very popular. Of the more than 1,200 public school districts across the state, the data so far shows very few have opted to use the law.
Texas Senate Bill 11 gives public schools the option to set aside time each day for a daily devotional period. Districts had until March 1 to decide whether they would implement that policy next year.
2. James Talarico’s North Austin church is bolstering security efforts
James Talarico’s hometown church is stepping up security efforts as the congressman’s campaign to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate continues.
In a post on Facebook this week, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church pastor Jim Rigby said the church has temporarily hired plainclothes security as a safety precaution in response to what it calls “hostile press” and “negative communication.”
3. Former Gov. Rick Perry pushes for legalizing ibogaine to aid veterans at SXSW
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry spoke at a South by Southwest Conference and Festival (SXSW) panel about the psychedelic drug ibogaine and how it can be used to help military veterans in the U.S.
During the Wednesday panel titled “Ibogaine in America: The Parable of Our Time,” Perry was joined by Marcus Luttrell, author of “Lone Survivor,” University of California, Berkeley professor Dr. Gul Dolen and Bryan Hubbard, chief executive officer of Americans for Ibogaine.
