Back in 1959 the renowned filmmaker, Billy Wilder, served up a comedy masterpiece that would go on to becoming, in 1989, one of the first 25 films to have the distinction of being honored as having such “cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance” that the National Film Registry would specially preserve Some Like it Hot for posterity, and the American Film Institute would name it, “The Funniest American movie of all time.
After more than half a century of continuing popularity, (Who wouldn’t love seeing Jack Lemmon & Tony Curtis in drag?), perhaps it should be no surprise that a musical version would finally emerge on Broadway. Now, that 2022 production is about to arrive at Houston’s Hobby Center, but with its short six-day run, fans of the original film better hurry if they wish to capture any of the limited tickets for this new stage musical. Fans of The Godfather saga, The Sopranos series, or gangland shows like Guys & Dolls, may find the plot of this show appealing as it follows two musicians suddenly caught up in the mobster world during the Prohibition era.
The place is the “Windy City” of Chicago, where these two innocent gents accidentally witness a murderous Mob rub-out. They even catch a cross-country train as they go on this hilarious run to avoid being murdered themselves. And just to play it safe, they disguise themselves by dressing up as women. It’s a time of bootleggers and speakeasies, when rum-runners were keeping the liquor flowing, while the Jazz Age kept the music flowing.
The show has a book by Matthew Lopez & Amber Ruffin, music by Marc Shaiman, Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Mr. Shaiman, while director and choreographer, Casey Nicholaw keeps the Roaring Twenties roaring with the sometimes acrobatic dancing of the cast. No wonder the Associated Press has called this show , “glorious, big, & high-kicking,” and it has been named Best Musical by the Drama Desk, the Outer Critics Circle, and the Drama League. Why not catch a ticket and go see for yourself?
