SAN ANTONIO – A man died after shooting himself while handcuffed in the back of a police car following a brief pursuit across San Antonio, officials said.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, the situation began on the city’s South Side when officers spotted a vehicle with mismatched license plates. A police helicopter followed the car as it moved across the city before the driver pulled into a parking lot and tried to run.
Officers caught him, handcuffed him behind his back, and placed him in a patrol vehicle.
Moments later, officers returned to the car and found the man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man used his own gun, but it’s still unclear how he was able to access it while in custody. Authorities plan to review body camera and patrol car video as part of the investigation.
