CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO (KFOX14/CBS4) — Mexican troops have been deployed to Ciudad Juárez and two other cities in an effort to reinforce security amid crime concerns.

According to a social media post, Mexico’s Defense Department said it has launched a security reinforcement to Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and León, deploying more than 1,000 members of the Mexican Army by air as part of the country’s National Public Security Strategy.

The Instagram post states that on Wednesday at 5 p.m., 1,170 personnel from the Mexican Army — including 270 members of the Parachute Rifle Brigade — began an air deployment from various points across the country.

The troops traveled aboard three strategic transport aircraft of the Mexican Air Force to the cities of Tijuana in Baja California, Ciudad Juárez in Chihuahua, and León in Guanajuato.

According to Mexico’s Defense Department, the deployed personnel are tasked with providing security, prevention, and deterrence against illicit activities by criminal groups operating in the cities.

In addition, the defense department said troops will cooperate with authorities in each state, aiming to foster a peaceful environment.
