A 60-year-old man is fighting for his life after an hourslong standoff near an elementary school ended with him being critically shot by police.
SELMA, Texas — The Texas Rangers have identified the man shot by Selma police Wednesday after an hourslong standoff near a neighborhood school.Â
The suspect has been identified as 60-year-old Byron Hoover and he is still in critical condition at a medical facility in San Antonio.
Police were called to the 16800 block of Showdown Path in The Retreat at Retama Park Quadplex Subdivision around 9:30 a.m., for a reported disturbance involving gunfire.Â
Upon arrival, officers heard multiple gunshot in the area. Witnesses gave investigators a description of Hoover and officers were quickly able to identify him as the suspect inside a nearby home and believed he was in possession of a firearm.Â
Officers tried to talk with Hoover but he continued to ignore their commands, according to Selma PD.Â
Authorities said after several hours, the incident “escalated” and Hoover was subsequently shot and taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.Â
Police said the incident occurred near an elementary school, which prompted a multi-agency response.Â
According to Selma PD, the investigation will be turned over to the Texas Rangers and remains active.Â
