One person was injured in the shooting, APD said.
AUSTIN, Texas — A suspect is in custody after a shooting at the Austin Central Library downtown on Saturday afternoon that left one person injured.
The Austin Police Department said around 12:06 p.m., it received several 911 calls reporting a shooting inside the library.
Officers responded to the scene and worked to clear the building. One victim who had been shot was taken to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
According to APD, the suspect fled the library before officers arrived. He was later arrested around 1:30 p.m. in South Austin.
Police said this was an isolated incident between two individuals and “not an active shooter situation.”
The incident prompted a large response from first responders due to its location in a public library.
No other details were provided about the identities of the suspect and victim or what led to the shooting.
“Thank you to our community members who called in tips to lead to the quick apprehension of the suspect, and to our public safety partners who assisted at the scene,” APD said. “We will release more details next week as the investigation continues.”
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he was grateful to the Austin Public Library employees and first responders for their immediate action.
“Public spaces and city-owned facilities should be a safe place for everyone,” Watson said.
The library remains closed for the day due to the incident.
