LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Early season heat is gripping our region, bringing temperatures more typical of summer than March, and setting the stage for increasing fire danger.

Friday will feature another round of unseasonable heat, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 90s across much of the area. A few spots, especially off the Caprock could briefly approach triple digits.

These temperatures are close to record territory for Lubbock and surrounding areas. Despite the heat, fire danger remains somewhat limited today thanks to lighter winds.

Conditions become more concerning heading into this weekend.

Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch, with widespread highs near 100 degrees. At the same time, humidity drops to around 5% and southwest winds increase to 15-20 mph.

A Fire Weather Watch has already been issued for the region.

Fire danger will likely remain elevated most of that day.

Slight relief in the form of a cold front is expected to arrive Sunday evening. This will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures by Monday, still slightly above average.

However, hot temperatures are expected to return soon after as the overall pattern remains dry.
