Forest Audelia Park
It’s been almost ten years since the Dallas Park and Recreation Department paired up with the Police Athletic League to create a boxing gym inside a rundown strip mall at Forest Lane and Audelia Road. The area had been plagued by crime, especially offenses perpetrated by and upon young people. City leaders were looking for ways to pull youth in, create lasting connections and keep them busy with positive and impactful activities.
The boxing gym was a big hit — popular with students and police officer mentors alike — and the project expanded to include a multi-phased plan for revitalizing the entire center. Next month, a ribbon cutting will be held to celebrate completion of the first phase.
The public is invited to attend the official dedication of Forest Audelia Park beginning at 4 p.m. on April 2, with remarks by D10 Council member Kathy Stewart and D10 Park Board member Scott Goldstein. The event represents an ending of sorts, as contractors finish the park with a flourish, but it’s also a beginning. Work on the multipurpose recreation center will begin soon.
Forest Audelia Park is at 9759 Forest Lane.
