Costume Season Meets the Office
It’s almost Halloween in Lubbock — and if you’re anything like me, you’re already debating whether to show up to work next week in costume. Whether you’re planning to roll into the office as a cowboy, a vampire, or the Barbie/Ken duo, it’s best to know what’s cool (and what’s not) before you grab that wig and face paint.

Plenty of local workplaces across the Hub City — from Texas Tech offices to downtown banks and local shops — embrace a little Halloween spirit. But not every office is on board, and even if they are, there’s a right way to do it.
First thing’s first — talk to your manager or HR before you go full zombie. Especially if this is your first Halloween at your job. The last thing you want is to walk into a serious staff meeting dressed like a giant taco while everyone else is in business casual.

And make sure your costume won’t interfere with your job. If you’re moving between work sites, stocking shelves, or serving customers, you’ll want something easy to move in. If you can’t sit down or see over your mask, it’s probably not worth the struggle.
Keep It Professional, Lubbock
It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget — use good judgment. Avoid anything offensive, controversial, or too revealing. (Yes, even if you’re working from home — Zoom cameras exist.) A good rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t wear it to the company Christmas party, don’t wear it on Halloween either.
It’s also smart to check your schedule before the big day. If you’ve got client calls, interviews, or video meetings, plan around them. Bring a change of clothes just in case things get serious mid-day — because nothing kills spooky fun faster than having to discuss Q4 budgets while dressed as Beetlejuice.
Have Fun, But Read the Room
Halloween’s a great excuse to loosen up and enjoy a little fun at work — something we could all use here in Lubbock as the fall rush hits. Just remember: be festive, not disruptive.

So go ahead, break out the cowboy hat or cat ears, but keep it tasteful. Because whether you’re at a downtown office, a United store, or working at one of our schools, the goal is to make people smile — not to scare off HR.
