Saturday’s baseball game between Auburn and Texas had the makings for another storybook finish.

Down by one run with two outs in the 9th inning, Texas pitcher Thomas Burns walked three straight batters to give Bristol Carter, the culprit of Friday’s walk-off win, another chance to etch his name into Auburn lore. However, fate would not be on his side for a second-straight night as he hit a grounder to 3rd base for a fielder’s choice and to secure the 7-6 win for Texas on Saturday night at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.

Texas took out agression on Auburn early on by running out to a 6-0 lead and chasing Tigers starter Jackson Sanders before the 4th inning, and added an insurance run in the 6th inning. Auburn responded by chipping away at the Longhorn lead by scoring two runs in the 4th, three runs in the 7th, and cutting the deficit to one run in the 8th.

Auburn recorded 10 hits in the game, with Bristol Carter, Chris Rembert, Bub Terrell, and Eric Guevara registering two hits each. Auburn’s bullpen posted solid numbers as well. The combination of LJ Cormier, Marcel Kulik, and Ryan Hetzler gave up five hits and one run while walking a batter and striking out six.

Game three of the series is set for 2 p.m. CT on Sunday at Plainsman Park, and will be streamed on SEC Network+.

The law firm of Rembert, Bub, and Guevara rattle the Longhorns bullpen (Texas 7, Auburn 5 end 7th)

Freshman Brett Crossland relieved Max Grubbs and immediately gave up a pair of RBI singles to Bub Terrell and Eric Guevara, but escaped pressure by striking out Mason McCraine.

It’s Marcel Kulik time (Texas 7, Auburn 2 top 6th)

LJ Cormier’s day is done after allowing a run on two hits in the top of the 6th inning. He did a great job of cooling off the Longhorns, but he is being pulled before more damage is done. Marcel Kulik is now on the mound. The right-handed transfer from Virginia Tech is making his second appearance of the season.

A pickoff play kills Auburn’s early momentum (Texas 6, Auburn 2 end 5th)

After LJ Cormier retired Texas in order in the top frame, Bristol Carter appeared to keep the good vibes going by reaching base on a bunt single. However, he was ultimately picked off at 1st base to put a damper on the drive. Chase Fralick and Ethin Bingaman each put the ball in play, but were not able to reach base.

The pendulum swings to Auburn, Tigers begin to chip away (Texas 6, Auburn 2 end 4th)

When you are down by six runs early, it is always easy to give up. Auburn is refusing to do that and exited the 4th inning by trimming Texas’ lead to four runs.

The first three batters of the inning reached base with a pair of walks and a single by Bub Terrell mixed in. The McCraine brothers grounded out in the inning, but the reward was a pair of RBI.

Let’s see how well Auburn’s bullpen battles Texas and if Auburn’s bats can continue to figure out Luke Harrison.

Longhorns get a runner to third, but are left off the board (Texas 6, Auburn 0 mid 4th)

Aiden Robbins goes deep… again. Texas has firm control of the game (Texas 6, Auburn 0 mid 3rd)

Texas has blown the game wide open thanks to a pair of Texas home runs.

To the delight of the Auburn crowd, Texas center fielder Aiden Robbins hit a home run to deep center field to extend the Longhorns’ lead to 3-0 in the 3rd inning. It was the third home run of the series for Robbins and his 9th of the season. Jayden Duplantier added to the score by drilling a three-run blast of his own over the War Eagle Wall to extend the Longhorns lead to 6-0 with two outs in the inning.

The wide lead has chased Auburn starter Jackson Sanders, whose night has ended after 2 2/3 innings where he allowed six runs on six hits with a season-high three walks. LJ Cormier replaced him by retiring the first batter he faced on a ground out.

Bottom of the lineup goes cold for Auburn (Texas 2, Auburn 0 end 2nd)

7-8-9 did not produce a threat to Texas pitcher Luke Harrison as they were retired in order. The McCraine Brothers struck out and Todd Clay grounded out to 3rd base in the inning, and will now turn the floor back to Jackson Sanders as he prepares to face the heart of Texas’ order.

Like Harrison, Sanders also found himself in a bases-loaded jam. Unfortunately, unlike Harrison, Sanders could not escape it. Freshman designated hitter Maddox Monsour singled to right field to score two runs with two out in the inning. Sanders hit Ethan Mendoza in the next at-bat, but Carson Tinney flew out to end the surge.

Carter followed his game-winning line drive on Friday with a leadoff double off the War Eagle Wall on Saturday. The next two batters, Chris Rembert and Chase Fralick, reached base via walk and a hit-by-pitch respectively. However, they were all left stranded as Texas starter Luke Harrison struck out the next two batters, and forced Eric Guevara to fly out to right field to end the threat.
