(UPDATE: MARCH 21)– The El Paso County Sherriff’s Office identified the 46-year-old man who died while in custody as Roel Contreras.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 12500 block of Campo Bello in San Elizario, Texas, for a disturbance involving a male subject reported to be acting erratically and screaming in the roadway.
Officials say when deputies arrived, Contreras ran off but was shortly detained by deputies and was placed in hand cuffs due to his behavior. A spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office did say in an update that no weapons were deployed including the use of a Taser or baton.
When Contreras lost consciousness, the spokesperson said that deputies rendered aid to Contreras until EMS arrived.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is conducting a criminal investigation. The Texas Rangers are also conducting an independent investigation, and the Internal Affairs Division has initiated an administrative review.
The Sheriff’s Office says that the three deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
SAN ELIZARIO, Texas (KVIA) — A 46-year-old man died Friday after deputies responded to a disturbance call in east El Paso County, authorities said.
Just before 5 p.m., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 12500 block of Campo Bello in reference to a subject disturbance. When deputies arrived, the man fled and became combative, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies were able to place the individual under arrest, at which point he lost consciousness.
The man was transported to a local hospital with CPR in progress, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, along with the Texas Rangers, have taken over the investigation.
