SAN ANTONIO – Two people are dead following a high-speed crash early Sunday morning after a reported series of vehicle break-ins in a far West Side neighborhood.
The incident began around 4 a.m. when a caller reported two men driving through a neighborhood in an older model Toyota, checking door handles and breaking into vehicles. Surveillance video showed two men entering driveways and targeting parked cars.
Shortly after the report, a deputy in the area spotted a vehicle matching that description near the intersection of Blacktail Crest and Bonita Bend, when the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
Another deputy near Culebra Road reported seeing the same vehicle speeding through the area without lights. A short time later, the vehicle crashed.
The two occupants of the Toyota were found critically injured, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. They were reportedly wearing gloves, consistent with the reported vehicle burglaries.
The vehicle they were driving may have been stolen. Items found inside are being examined to determine whether they were used in or taken during the break-ins.
Authorities are canvassing the surrounding neighborhoods and have already identified several vehicles that were burglarized overnight, but victims often do not realize their vehicles were entered until later in the morning.
