South of Haskell Avenue on a stretch of S. Fitzhugh that cuts through District 7, a black sedan and a small white SUV reached a bridge just after 11 p.m. Wednesday—the sedan being tailgated, the SUV pressing—and what happened next was captured by two nearby business cameras, but hasn’t been released. “They were like, baa baa, baa baa. It was frequent. I say like a lower caliber gun,” said Anthony Smith, a neighborhood resident who heard the exchange from his home.
Three men inside the sedan were hit; Dallas Fire Rescue transported two to a hospital, one in critical condition, while the third died at the scene. A fourth occupant, uninjured, told police the confrontation had started as road rage. The Medical Examiner’s Office has not identified the deceased, and as of Friday afternoon, no arrest had been made. Smith, for his part, pushed back on citywide data suggesting violent crime is trending downward in the district. “This is a high, crime is heavy over here,” he said.
Dallas Police Detective J. Conklin is leading the investigation and asking anyone with information to call 214-671-3646 or email joshua.conklin@dallaspolice.gov.
