LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Policy holders of Commercial and Medicare Advantage through UnitedHealthcare could lose coverage of services with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Texas Tech Physicians, according to a news release issued by TTUHSC.
TTUHSC issued a notice of potential termination of their participation agreement with UnitedHealthcare. Unless an agreement is reached, termination is set for March 31, 2026.
TTUHSC and Texas Tech Physicians are in ongoing negotiations with UnitedHealthcare.
“Texas Tech Physicians opened discussions with UnitedHealthcare in early 2025 for the Amarillo, Lubbock and Permian Basin campuses as the rates within these agreements have not been updates in 13 years,” TTP Executive Director Martin Clay said. “The decision to terminate is primarily due to disagreements over reimbursement rates amid the rising cost of patient care. Health care costs have risen significantly in the last 13 years while TTP’s reimbursement rates with UHC have remained constant.”
The group says more than 30,000 patients would lose in-network access.
Texas Tech Physicians says calls its proposal fair and competitive.
“Texas Tech Physicians’ primary commitment is to the health and well-being of our patients,” Clay said. “We assure our patients that Texas Tech Physicians will continue to provide care, even if out-of-network. However, patients may face higher out-of-pocket costs for medical services received after the termination date.”
