The Austin Police Department is investigating a Sunday shooting on Loyola Ln. that resulted in Austin’s 16th homicide of 2026.
According to a Monday press release, officers responded to a shoot/stab urgent call at 4700 Loyola Ln. at 5:03 p.m. The caller reported a disturbance and possible gunfire. Officers arrived on the scene and located a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
The victim was later identified as 47-year-old Nicholas Zarate, a Hispanic male. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene and interviewed witnesses, who said Zarate was shot and killed by a suspect who fled the area on foot.
Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to contact police at 512-974-TIPS.
You can also submit anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting the website or calling 512-472-8477. There is a reward of up to $1,000 available for information that leads to an arrest.
Earlier in the month, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office determined that the case being investigated as Austin’s 15th homicide of the year would not result in charges. That’s because the investigation revealed the incident, which involved a security guard at a downtown bank, was an act of self-defense.
