After the completion of the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the tip time and television network were finalized on Sunday evening with the No. 11 seed Texas Longhorns set for a 6:10 p.m. Central tip on CBS against the No. 2 seed Purdue Boilemakers in the first session at the SAP Center in San Jose.
It’s the seventh meeting between the two programs with Texas leading the all-time series 4-2 and the Longhorns facing the Boilermakers multiple times in the tournament.
In 1996, No. 10 seed Texas upset No. 2 seed Purdue in the Sweet 16 after trailing by nine points with 12 minutes remaining, taking the lead for the first time when Travis Mays hit two late free throws and sealing the victory with an iconic block by Panama Myers.
Seven years later, No. 1 seed Texas handled No. 9 seed Purdue in the second half for a 67-77 victory in the second round on the way to the Final Four. TJ Ford led the Horns with 21 points, nine rebounds, and all eight assists for Rick Barnes’ team.
The last NCAA Tournament meeting went less favorably for Texas — the Boilers took control in the first half when the Horns went almost 10 minutes without scoring, recovering enough to trail by six points at halftime and tie the game at 52-52 midway through the second half before Purdue responded with a 7-0 run to create enough separation for the 81-71 win. Texas guard Marcus Carr scored a game-high 23 points as Purdue received a huge boost off the bench from center Trevion Williams, who scored 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting.
