Elon Musk’s tunneling company is one step closer to digging in Dallas, after a site in the southern part of the city was selected as a winner of a competition for The Boring Company’s next project on Tuesday.

Hoque Global’s project in University Hills was initially named in a list of 16 finalists that were selected out of 487 submissions. Early Tuesday morning, the Dallas site was named in a list of three winners for The Boring Company’s project.

The Boring Company creates tunnel passageways to transform city travel and is one of Elon Musk’s companies along with SpaceX, Tesla and X. The company hosted the Tunnel Vision Challenge, which called on individuals, companies and governments to submit proposals.

The company was expected to announce a singular project winner from its sixteen projects, but instead selected three. In a social media post, the company said it was overwhelmed with the submissions, and decided to broaden the number of selectees.

The next steps for The Boring Company and project stakeholders include meeting with elected officials and other community leaders, utility and subsurface investigations and geotechnical borings.

The projects will be built and funded if they are deemed feasible after those meetings and investigations, according to the X post.

When the Dallas site was announced as a finalist, the City of Dallas released a statement that said the project would come at no cost to the city.

The University Hills Loop will connect a future commercial area of the 270-acre University Hills project to the University of North Texas Dallas DART Station if the tunnel is fully approved.

Mike Hoque, CEO of Hoque Global, had previously said the University Hills project would connect to the nearby university campus, regardless of whether the Dallas development was selected for the Boring Company’s project.

Hoque had also said that being named a finalist for the project highlights the recognition of the innovation of the development, and how infrastructure solutions can support opportunities for the surrounding community.

Hoque Global’s project near the intersection of Interstate 20 and Lancaster Road is set to include hundreds of single-family homes, 1,500 apartments, 1.5 million square feet of commercial space and other features.

Infrastructure work is underway and lots will be delivered to homebuilders in early 2027. The homes will be built by D.R. Horton and Lennar, which bought the lots back in 2024.

Additionally, The Boring Company expects to continue to work with two other bids, the Henderson Utility Tunnel in Henderson, Tennessee and Morgan’s Wonderland Tunnel in San Antonio.

Sites in Bastrop, Woodland Township and Waco were among the list of finalists, but were not selected.
