If you came looking for a tidy set of numbers to explain FC Dallas’ 4-3 win over the Houston Dynamo…well…good luck.

This is one of those matches where the stats tell multiple stories all at once. Dallas dominated early, completely lost control for a short, tiny window that nearly cost them the game, and then recovered enough to take advantage of a red card and steal the game late. The data reflects a bit of everything here. But mostly it says “what the hell happened here?”

Let’s break it down as much as we can here.

Defensive recap

For roughly 86-ish minutes. FC Dallas was pretty damn good defensively.

But then there was that four minute stretch. Yeah. I shutter a bit thinking about this four minute stretch that saw a bad give away lead to a goal. A completely free header off a corner kick. And then a play through the channels that froze the defense in their tracks.

This wasn’t Houston slowly building pressure. They were clearly on the back foot after giving up two early goals. Instead, it was Dallas completely unraveling for a short window, and in MLS, that is all it takes.

Here is the main point from this game: Dallas’ defensive floor is still way too low. When things go wrong, they go really wrong.
