The National Medal of Honor Museum will host a National Medal of Honor Day observance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the museum.

According to the U.S. Army website, the Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor given in the United States military.

The event will commemorate the first Medals of Honor awarded in 1863 and celebrate the first anniversary of the National Medal of Honor Museum’s grand opening.

It will include free admission to the museum during operating hours, a flag-raising ceremony at 10:30 a.m., a veterans luncheon during which six veterans will be awarded Wounded Warrior scholarships, and the opportunity to see a new exhibit about American pilot Edward Rickenbacker, who flew during World War I.

The Medal of Honor Day luncheon with the Marine Corps JROTC cadets from McKinney High School is free for veterans but requires registration. The luncheon runs from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to the National Medal of Honor Museum website, some parking lots nearby are free while others require a fee.
