SAN ANTONIO – Another San Antonio school is on the chopping block.

This time, the spotlight is on Edgewood ISD, where the school board voted to partner with a charter group to help boost academic performance.

The school board voted 6-1 to partner with Third Future Schools to help boost academic performance.

The board, agreeing to partner with Third Future Schools (TFS), a Colorado-based charter group that will take control of Brentwood Middle School next school year.

The move raised concerns in the community ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

“We are a vulnerable community, and this is just it’s not right,” said education advocate Melody Herrera.

Brentwood is the latest school in the spotlight, as districts across San Antonio face shakeups and school closures.

The EISD board, approving a TFS partnership in hopes of turning around the district’s failing academic scores.

“What happens if we don’t go into this partnership?,” Board Vice-President Martha Castilla asked. “If we don’t go into this partnership.. Then we’re at risk for state intervention.”

This partnership will give TFS control of Brentwood Middle School, which has scored an ‘F’ from the Texas Education Agency for the past two years.

“I think they should have been taking preventative measures years ago,” Herrera said.

The non-profit currently runs 12 schools across Texas, Louisiana and Colorado.

San Antonio ISD faces a similar situation as Edgewood. During their meeting Monday night, the board voted to close Rhodes Middle School while also approving a contract with TFS — giving it three more campuses:

Tefolla middle, Ogden and Hirsch Elementaries.

“We ain’t pieces off chess on a board,” said Crystal Villareal. “What about our kids? Like, that’s my question.”

Edgewood teachers and parents asked the board to fully consider a decision they say will have lasting impacts.

“Do not make these decisions in the dark,” one teacher said to the board. “Third Future does not have to be our future.”

The EISD board passed the agreement with a 6-1 vote, it’s unclear what the next steps of that process will look like.
