LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – For many high school students, prom is one of the most memorable nights of the year, but for some, the cost of a dress can put the experience out of reach.
The annual Prom Queen event turns generosity into opportunity, helping high school girls find their perfect dress at no cost.
Impact on prom shoppers
Alexis Chiles is getting ready for her prom and said this is the moment she has always waited for.
“I came here because this is my first ever time to prom, and finding a prom dress is both overwhelming and kind of exciting so just coming here is just an amazing opportunity,” Chiles said.
More than 1,000 dresses were donated, ranging every color, style and size imaginable.
Cordelia Shannon said she is thankful for the opportunity.
“I think it’s really nice because even though you can find dresses everywhere, finding one that’s maybe free or even cheaper is so helpful especially if you are on a really tight budget like I am when I am saving for college,” Shannon said.
Why this event happens
Katy Evans, a senior at Lubbock Christian High School and one of the organizers of the event, said she believes every girl deserves this special moment.
“The best part is definitely when they find their dress and just the joy that they have on their faces, finding a prom dress can be really special it’s just a special moment and that’s definitely the best part is seeing their smile and the joy of finding that dress,” Evans said.
What shoppers are saying
“I’m just really happy that this is here, because I would have been like panicking about getting a dress,” Chiles said. “I just am really happy to be here, and I will definitely be coming back next year.”
The two day event is over, with hundreds of high school girls finding their perfect dress for the perfect night.
