SAN ANTONIO – The entire sports media ecosystem is talking about the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama today.
Specifically about Wemby openly campaigning for the MVP award…
Tonight on Don’s Extra Point, I’ve heard those who say he shouldn’t do that… let others do the campaigning for you. Show some humility…
And I get it… but the thing that grabbed me from the very first time I met Wemby before the draft in the summer of 23 was his honesty… he’s a straight shooter… so how can we criticize him for caring? So many times we hear the star athletes say, I don’t care about awards, or I don’t pay attention to the media… c’mon man… of course they do…
And it’s not like he just went off on his own… he was asked what would be the 3 main arguments for his MVP case.
He thoughtfully laid them out… 1. he’s the best defender in the league. 2. as good as OKC has been, the Spurs are 4-1 against them…
And 3… there’s more to offense than just scoring… and he’s right… Wemby’s gravity on both ends helps his teammates
In so many ways… on defense it helps them guard, and on offense it helps them score.
And did you notice how politely he called out his rivals… without even calling them by name. When he says he plays defense… it’s a direct shot at
Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic… because quite frankly, they don’t… he then says the Spurs dominated the Thunder… a fact, knowing full well that he could soon see SGA in the playoffs… that is what you call having some… bravado… he knows he’ll have to back that up here in a few weeks, and he’s fully embracing that challenge.
Wemby’s odds are getting better, but SGA is still the favorite… and if Wemby came up short in the MVP vote,
It might not be the worst thing… longtime Spurs fans still remember ’95… David Robinson won the MVP, and on the same night Hakeem Olajuwon took exception. The Rockets beat the Spurs in the W.C. Finals, and went on to the title… Wemby would probably settle for the same… to lose MVP but win it all…?
But I love that he wants both. He wants everything… MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-NBA…
A championship, Finals MVP, and he wants more than one of all of them… don’t we want him to want that…? Yeah,
So let’s not clutch our pearls when he’s just being honest enough to admit it. That’s my point.
