A retirement community in East Dallas, with a knack for knots and a hint of humor, is celebrating a decade of doing good for others.
Back in 2016, a group at CC Young Senior Living started turning everyday plastic grocery bags into sleeping mats.
Over the past decade, the group has recycled more than 180-thousand plastic bags into 300-plus sleeping mats to support shelters and community organizations throughout the region.
Here’s where the humor comes in. The volunteers gave themselves a memorable name – The Happy Hookers.
On Monday, March 30, 2026, CC Young Senior Living will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its volunteer group at its weekly meeting in The Point Auditorium.
During the event, The Happy Hookers (CC Young Residents and Point Members) will demonstrate how to transform discarded plastic grocery bags into durable sleeping mats, which are distributed to individuals experiencing homelessness across North Texas.
Past and current members of the group will demonstrate the mat-making process and share their work.
