After nearly two decades of serving up plant-based comfort food, Green Vegetarian Cuisine will shutter its Alamo Quarry Market location.

In a Tuesday Facebook post, chef-owner Mike Behrend said the restaurant will end its 19-year run on Friday, April 17, due to escalating costs and changing consumer habits. The business did everything it could to keep the lights on, but the “brutal” conditions facing the restaurant industry became overwhelming, he added.

“It’s been a great run,” Behrend said. “We’ve introduced a lot of people to great-tasting plant-based food. My business partners and I have raised our children in and around Green, supporting the community with food and help over the years. Our hope is we made a positive impact on San Antonio.”

Green started with a single eatery at Five Points, before becoming one of the first restaurants at the Pearl in 2013. The business eventually opened an Asian food spinoff and Green outlets in Alon Town Centre and Houston before scaling back to its original restaurant, which relocated to 255 E. Basse Road, Building R 940, in the Quarry, around five years ago.

Although there had been other Alamo City restaurants focused on healthy cuisine before Green’s arrival, it was among the first to offer a fully plant-based menu. Since then, the number of vegetarian and vegan dining options here has expanded.

Earth Burger, a vegetarian fast-food restaurant owned by Behrend and his partners will stay in operation. That business is located at 818 NW Loop 410.
