Dallas Police say officers responded to the shooting in the 3000 block of Lakefield Drive at 4:20 p.m Wednesday.

DALLAS — Dallas police are investigating after a juvenile was shot Wednesday afternoon near Bachman Lake Park.

Officers responded around 4:20 p.m. to the 3000 block of Lakefield Drive, where they found a child suffering from gunshot wounds. The child was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, police said.

The shooting happened in an area neighbors describe as typically calm and family-friendly.

“It’s a good area. You know, you see a lot of families out here,” said witness Sarah Verver.

That sense of normalcy quickly changed as emergency crews arrived.

“You see the yellow tape, and you immediately think, you know, this is a crime scene,” Verver said.

Investigators were focused on a van at the scene.

An anonymous witness told WFAA they heard a popping sound before seeing several children run from the vehicle. The witness said a young girl appeared to have been shot.

Another person at the park called 911, and the child was rushed to the hospital.

“It’s gut-punching… one minute you’re just walking in the park, and next you see an ambulance, and it’s a kid being taken out,” Verver said.

Dallas police have not said whether anyone has been arrested or what led to the shooting.
