EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A driver accused of a hit-and-run in Central El Paso that left a man seriously injured in 2025 has been sentenced, but will not serve jail time.

Court records show that on March 12, 18-year-old Carlos Manuel Rivera was convicted of a collision involving injury or death and was sentenced to 10 years of probation and 500 hours of community service.

Investigators said Rivera was the driver who hit 32-year-old Samuel Bryan Ponce on April 12 with his car when Ponce was riding a 2017 TaoTao Scooter on Piedras Street.

Police said Rivera was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu up Piedras, entering the “mandatory left turn lane” to turn on Tularosa Avenue, but Rivera continued straight, hitting Ponce and his scooter.

Police said Rivera then left the scene.

Rivera was arrested after authorities received an anonymous tip.
