If you’re into all things decorative and DIY, you’ll want to keep an eye out for the new brand setting down roots in Northwest San Antonio. It’s set to give a plaza’s abandoned tenant space a new life in 2026.

The Texas-founded company Michaels will soon open a new store at the Bandera Pointe Shopping Center. Located at 11655 Bandera Road, it sits off the city’s busy North Loop 1604 highway and is just minutes away from Helotes.

Where one set of doors closes, another opens. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) report shows the arts and crafts shop will replace what was formerly a Joann Fabrics spot. It comes after a February 2025 announcement that the chain would close all of its U.S. spaces just one month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Michaels Companies Inc. acquired Joann’s private label brands and intellectual property that same summer, allowing it to expand its offerings to customers. This includes the addition of over 600 new products, including quilting supplies, specialty threads, sewing machines, and other items.

Per the state filing, crews will start renovations to more than 25,000 square feet of the suite in May 2026. The scope of work includes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, costing investors roughly $700,000. The makeover should be complete by Tuesday, September 15, of this year, according to the report. MySA reached out to Michaels about an estimated grand opening date, but did not immediately hear back.

Once finished, the business will join an impressive lineup of popular tenants. An Ulta Beauty, T.J. Maxx, and Ross Dress for Less are just a few staples already at the strip.
