Clemente Garcia, 37, was arrested Tuesday after a man was shot and later died near the Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man has been charged with murder several days after a deadly shooting in East Austin. 

In an update on Thursday, the Austin Police Department (APD) said 37-year-old Clemente Garcia was arrested and charged with first-degree Murder after a 47-year-old was pronounced dead near the Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt on Sunday.

According to initial reports, law enforcement responded to a call about a possible shooting or stabbing shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at 4700 Loyola Lane. 

Once on scene, police said they found a man who appeared to have been shot. He was pronounced dead and later identified as 47-year-old Nicholas Zarate. 

APD said the suspect, later identified as Garcia, fled the scene after the shooting. Garcia was arrested on Tuesday on initial felony warrants unrelated to Sunday’s homicide. 

This is Austin’s 16th homicide of 2026.
