A man is now in custody after reportedly firing an AR-15-style rifle at multiple vehicles in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Central Texas on Wednesday, March 25. The active shooter incident happened in Bastrop, a small town about 33 miles east of Austin.

Bastrop Police officers, alongside multiple surrounding law enforcement agencies, responded to the 100 block of Hunters Crossing Boulevard following reports of shots fired around 3:49 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. In an update, Bastrop Police Chief Vicky Steffanic identified the suspected shooter as 25-year-old Kobe Lee Mosser.

Bastrop Police said Mosser drove into the Home Depot parking lot and began firing an AR-15-style rifle from the back of his vehicle at multiple others. At one point, police said Mosser exited his vehicle and continued firing.

Bastrop Police Officer James Hill was the first officer who arrived on scene and approached Mosser. He, accompanied by Victim Services liaison Shannon Merritt, was able to take Mosser into custody without incident. Police confirmed no one was injured and there are no other suspects.

The full extent of property damage and the number of affected victims — including reports involving families with children — remains under investigation.

“First, I and the members of our staff are extremely thankful that, despite the seriousness of this incident, no injuries have been reported,” Steffanic said in an update. “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Officer Hill, Ms. Merritt. and all assisting agencies for their rapid, coordinated, and professional response.”

She added that this remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation. If you were in the area or have any information, you can contact Bastrop Police at bpdcommunity@cityofbastrop.org.
