Richardson ISD will install a portable classroom building at Canyon Creek Elementary in June after City Council unanimously approved a temporary use permit March 23.

The details

City planner Aaron Zilz said the temporary building will serve as additional classroom space for sixth-grade students at Canyon Creek. The building, which will house two classrooms, is set to be in use from June 2026 to June 2028.

The portable building will be located on the north side of the elementary campus, between the indoor gymnasium and outdoor playground. Zilz said RISD also plans to install a 6-foot chain link fence with security gates to create a secure area around the building, as well as an accessibility ramp.

What’s next

Renovations at Richardson North Junior High are expected to be completed in summer 2028, transforming the junior high into a middle school for sixth through eighth grade. At that time, Canyon Creek’s sixth graders will transfer over to Richardson North, freeing up classroom space at the elementary school.
