There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes at a school that students, and even parents, don’t always get to see. From early mornings to tons of meetings, principals carry the responsibility of shaping not just a campus, but the experience of every student who walks through those doors.
That’s exactly why the Ysleta Independent School District hosts its annual “Principal for a Day” event which invites community members to step into the shoes of a principal at a local YISD campus.
I was so excited to be invited by Principal Holguin to be the principal for her campus at Capistrano Elementary school. The day really gave me a firsthand look at the dedication, energy, and heart it takes to lead a school.

What It’s Really Like to Be a Principal for a Day in YISD
From the moment I arrived, I felt the love. I was welcomed by a sign made just for me, instantly setting the tone for the day. The school’s principal, Ms. Holguin greeted me with a warm smile and coffee because, “Every principal always has to have a coffee in hand!”

Another pleasant surprise was a cute custom t-shirt made by volunteers that read “Principal for the day, Capistrano” and I proudly wore it all day long.
The first principal duty of the day was the morning announcements! I got on the intercom and introduced myself to the students, told them how proud I was that they made it to school today and I made sure to tell them to give themselves a round of applause because everyone needs to be their biggest cheerleader!!
Ms. Holguin then walked me through the schedule for the day and we jumped right into classroom visits. One of my favorite parts of the visit was handing out prizes to students and seeing their faces light up as I asked them to share with me their favorite food. It was such a sweet reminder of how the little things can mean so much.
What made the day even more special were the personal connections. Some students recognized me from past events, others told me they listen to Iris & Grizz every morning, and one class completely surprised me by serenading me with “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any more fun, the Easter Bunny made a surprise appearance! It was a day filled with joy, connection, and so many unforgettable moments.
I was able to meet the teachers, staff, and even the group of volunteers who spend their free time helping out at the school.

After wrapping up my day as a principal we were invited to a luncheon where other participants were treated to lunch, live performances from YISD students, and we were each presented with art work that was created by a student from the school we spent the day at.

Being part of this event was a reminder that education is a team effort, and that strong schools are built through collaboration between educators and the community.
By bringing in familiar faces from the community, students are given the chance to feel seen, heard, and inspired. It opens the door for meaningful interactions and reminds students that their dreams are valid and supported by people who believe in them.

Experiences like this serve as a reminder of how impactful it can be to simply show up for students. I walked away feeling inspired and hopeful that, in some small way, my visit made a positive impact on the kids I had the chance to meet.
Because sometimes all it takes is one moment, one conversation, or one visit to make a difference that lasts a lifetime.
