ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women’s tennis is entering the final quarter of its regular season schedule, featuring five remaining regular season matches. The first matchups on the docket are a pair of home bouts at the UTA Tennis Center over the weekend, first at 4 p.m. Friday against the Arkansas State Red Wolves and ending with an 11 a.m. Saturday tilt with the UTSA Roadrunners.
UTA (4-11) is coming off a 6-1 loss to the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Mavericks lone point came on singles Court 1 when Cal Poly’s Kennedy Buntrock was forced to retire due to injury in the decisive third set of her match against Elizaveta Mladentseva.
One other singles match went to a third set. Diana Kaibara knocked off the Mustangs’ Jessica MacCallum 7-5 in the first set of their Court 2 matchup, but fell by the same score in the second. MacCallum went on to win the bout in a super tiebreaker 10-2.
Against the Red Wolves, UTA is 13-2 all-time in the series which includes a 12-match winning streak. The two last met in 2023, a 4-0 win for the Mavericks. UTA also holds a sizable 26-8 edge in the series against UTSA. The Roadrunners picked up a win in last season’s match, snapping a 15-game losing streak to the Mavericks
Scouting Arkansas State
The Red Wolves come to Arlington with an 8-7 record that includes a 5-4 mark on the road. Arkansas State is coming off a road trip against Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina that it split, dropping the former 4-2 and winning the latter by the same margin.
Individually, Anna Grigoreva has been a staple in the Red Wolves lineup, featuring a 6-5 record in dual matches and is a perfect 4-0 on Court 2. Meghna Arun Kumar and Carla Muro Castellvi have been risers throughout the spring for Arkansas State. Kumar is 9-3 — including 5-0 on Court 6 — and has competed as high as Court 4. Castellvi has at least one win on courts three, four, five and six, working to an overall record of 7-4.
Since a stretch of three consecutive matches that saw the Red Wolves win the doubles point earlier in spring, Arkansas State has won doubles three times in its last nine matches. The Red Wolves have a combined record of 9-16 in doubles matches on courts one and two.
Scouting UTSA
The Roadrunners enter a Friday matchup with UNT at 8-7. UTSA, however, is 0-4 on the road in dual matches. Prior to their match against UNT, the Roadrunners last action resulted in a 4-0 loss to Tulsa.
UTSA and UTA have shared a trio of opponents this spring, with the Roadrunners match against UNT making it four. Both the Mavericks and UTSA were swept by Houston. The Roadrunners and UTA have also each faced Abilene Christian and Tarleton State once.
The Mavericks fell to Tarleton State 4-1 on March 13 while UTSA defeated the Texans 4-3 back on March 1. Conversely, UTA defeated Abilene Christian 5-2 on March 20 and the Roadrunners dropped their bout with the Wildcats 4-3 in January.
Streaming and live scoring will be available for both matches. The Arkansas State match will have live stats kept on Statbroadcast, as will the UTSA matchup. Both matches will be streamed on Sporfie.
