The Crabs have welcomed in both rugby veterans and newcomers this season.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Crabs’ rugby team is doing its best to fill the Spring football void by making their first playoff appearance in 12 years this weekend.

The Crabs were out practicing at Bill Witt Park Thursday night after coming off a perfect regular season and a division title. The team is made up of guys who are all local and range in age from 21 up to about 45. They say they’ve done it with members that have both been playing rugby for years and some that have been playing for weeks.

“We have guys who joined two weeks ago and they’re on the team already, so we’re always looking for new guys,” said fly-half Bobby Hyatt.

Hyatt is the team’s primary playmaker and is essentially like a quarterback.

“We’re also a community and we’re always looking to develop each other and grow together,” he said.

Head Coach Robert Hayes echoed the sentiment that all are welcome to try out for the team in the future.

“It’s a game that everybody can play,” Hayes said. “It doesn’t matter your size: big or small, fast or slow, you can come out and play rugby.”

The Crabs will host Oklahoma City this Saturday at 2 PM at Haas Middle School.
If they win that< they would go on to play in the Red River Championship on April 12th.
