Three members of the Hunt family were sentenced to prison for filing $8.5 million worth of tax refunds they were not entitled to.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Three members of the Hunt family, from Arlington, were sentenced to prison for their roles in a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme, according to the Department of Justice.Â
The family members were charged with organizing a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns in the names of alleged trusts they controlled. The scheme sought more than $8.5 million in tax refunds they were not entitled to receive, according to a release.Â
The scheme was able to accrue just over $1.7 million in fraudulent proceeds from the IRS. The family members used the money to purchase luxury goods including, furniture, cryptocurrency, luxury vehicles, and a house in Mississippi.Â
Baylon Hunt is said to have submitted additional fake documents to the IRS, including false financial instruments and altered money orders. He and another family member not named were ordered to stop submitting false documents, although they continued to do so.Â
David Hunt was sentenced to 92 months in prison, his son Baylon Hunt was sentenced to 38 months in prison, and Baylon’s half-brother Corey Burt was sentenced to 94 months in prison. A fourth unnamed family member, who was also convicted, is set to be sentenced in May.Â
Three members of the Hunt family were also convicted on multiple counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns. Baylon was acquitted of two of those aiding and assisting counts.Â
The defendants were also ordered to pay back the over $1.7 million in restitution to the United States.Â
