The Gregory-Portland Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Gregory-Portland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they’ve averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Gregory-Portland fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Carroll on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They lost 10-4 to the Tigers. The Wildcats haven’t had much luck with the Tigers recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they’ve met.

Emily LaFavers spent all eight innings on the mound, and it’s clear why: she surrendered three earned (and seven unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn’t tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Leanna Molina made the most of her time in the batter’s box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Kailani Vargas was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial entered their tilt with Flour Bluff on Friday with three consecutive wins but they’ll enter their next game with four. They came out on top against the Hornets by a score of 7-4.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Lyla Creek gave up four earned runs on six hits.
At the plate, Parker Malone was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Emilee Holmes, who got on base in two of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases and one RBI.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial’s record now sits at 19-9. As for Gregory-Portland, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-15-2.
Monday’s contest will be a test for both teams’ pitchers. Gregory-Portland hasn’t had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .325. However, it’s not like Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial struggles in that department as they’ve averaged .393. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Gregory-Portland might still be hurting after the 6-0 loss they got from Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in their previous meeting on March 3rd. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.
