EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A group of community members gathered outside the El Paso County courthouse Friday morning, urging El Paso District Attorney James Montoya to strengthen laws and increase accountability for drunk driving offenses.
The gathering brought together residents, advocates, and victims impacted by impaired driving, many of whom shared concerns about current legal consequences and enforcement, according to the 34th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The demonstration highlighted growing frustration over what participants described as insufficient deterrents for repeat offenders.
Officials from the district attorney’s office said they engaged directly with attendees during the event, holding what they described as an open and candid discussion about how drunk driving cases are currently prosecuted and where improvements could be made.
“We had an honest conversation—about their concerns, how these cases are prosecuted, and where change is needed,” the office said in a statement.
Prosecutors emphasized their commitment to holding offenders accountable while also working alongside state lawmakers to pursue stronger legal protections. The office signaled that potential reforms could focus on stricter penalties and enhanced preventative measures.
Advocacy efforts were also supported by the Sober Streets Movement, a group pushing for tougher impaired driving laws and increased public awareness.
Officials acknowledged the emotional weight behind the calls for change, noting that many in attendance have been personally affected by drunk driving incidents.
