HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Voters are turning up at the polls to vote in the special election for Houston’s District C seat.

The seat opened when District C Councilmember Abbie Kamin resigned to run for Harris County Attorney.

Election Day for the open seat is April 4.

Early voting began on March 18 and will run through March 31.

4,124 people voted as of March 27, according to the Harris County Clerk’s Office.

The district represents much of Houston’s core, like Montrose and The Heights.

The district is 35 square miles and has approximately 215,000 residents.

With seven candidates in the race, political scientists believe that the election is likely to go to a runoff.

“It’s seven candidates. It’s very likely to go to a runoff and I think they already set the runoff date for early May,” University of Houston Political Science Lecturer Nancy Sims said.

Whoever wins will fill the unfinished term that ends January 2028.
