EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Strong spring winds returned to the Borderland, kicking up dust and pollen that lowered visibility and created difficult driving conditions across El Paso.

Residents in the Upper Valley described gusty conditions that made travel feel unsafe at times.

“I really haven’t experienced anything like it. I kind of realized it when my car was just shaking on the road,” one person said.

The wind also brought blowing dust that some said can trigger seasonal allergies and make people feel ill.

“No, no, I don’t like it. The dust and the wind and I don’t know. I always get sick from this weather,” another resident said.

Drivers urged others to slow down, use caution and secure loose items that could become airborne.

“I do try to drive a little bit safer. Of course, obviously, you never know what’s gonna fly by. I don’t know if you all have seen those videos of like trampolines just flying by. So that’s definitely scary,” one person said.

Another added, “Stay safe, preferably stay inside just to be safer. Drive on the roads only if you have to.”

For people new to the area, the region’s spring winds can be a surprise.

“I’m from San Francisco,” one resident said. “It has its days, but it’s never this windy from what I can remember.”

Visitors from out of state also noted the difference.

“We’re from Colorado,” another person said. “No, we definitely don’t get the dust storms like this.”

Others took the blustery weather in stride.

“Wonderful, isn’t it? I might get blown away, but it’s okay,” one resident said. “As long as I can squeeze in a couple of days by the pool, I’m all good.”

A high wind warning was issued until midnight.

Residents were urged to stay cautious on roadways and remain weather aware.
