BERWYN, Ill (WGN) — While two plus two does equal four, mini golf plus pub crawl in the southwest suburbs also equals fun in the name of showcasing local businesses, with a caveat to add some competitive spirit.
Melissa Granat is the owner of Godson’s in Berwyn. On Sunday, she walked WGN-TV through her team’s pride and joy — the Twisted Putter Trophy. The award is given to the “best and most creative” mini-golf hole at the Depot District Mini-Golf Pub Crawl.
“It makes me happy … [it] makes everyone that comes in here have a good time,” Granat said. “I don’t get to make the decision of who wins, so it’s solely on the golfers that participate.”
Their design is very Berwyn. Long-time businesses, well-known icons like the car Spindel, and the popular Route 66 are all included in their hole on the crawl.
“It’s just a good day to get out in the afternoon,” said Eddie Wilkowski, owner of The Garage Smokehouse and Bar. “It’s just a good community event to get people out and about.”
Wilkowski’s submission for the crawl came via family ties. His nephew, a Purdue engineering graduate who was named as one of Indiana’s top 30 under 30 engineers, came to Wilkowski’s restaurant and put his skills to work designing a mini-golf hole.
“Every time is different. It’s all about the way you hit it,” Wilkowski said, giving the Garage Smokehouse hole a test run.
Other awards are given out at the event as well. Individuals and teams can also take home trophies for creative costumes.
The Berwyn Development Corporation is the organizer behind the event, and they see the crawl as a way to highlight the community’s tenacious spirit, while also celebrating warmer weather on the horizon.
“Our community is very resilient, always has been,” said Jousef Mondragon, vice president of economic development at BDC. “This is a way of celebrating the season, but also being able to get new establishments into the fold as well.”
Those who are interested in participating in the Depot District Mini-Golf Pub Crawl can register online or in person at 3322 South Oak Park Avenue on the second floor.
